Autonomous vehicle trial at Portsmouth International Port
Aurrigo International plc (AIM: AURR), a leading international provider of transport technology solutions, is pleased to announce that it has been selected for the next phase of the Freight Innovation Fund to deploy its autonomous technology at Portsmouth International Port.
Having initially secured a £10,000 Accelerator grant to undertake a feasibility study for the project, Aurrigo has now been selected for the next phase of the programme and will receive further funding of up to £100,000 to support the deployment.
The project will see Aurrigo trial its Auto-Shuttle® electric vehicle at Portsmouth International Port to demonstrate that its autonomous technology can operate safely and reliably in a live, mixed-traffic port environment. Auto-Shuttle® will transport people, baggage and freight on a 1km journey portside, with deployment expected to commence in the next month.
The project represents a further opportunity for Aurrigo to showcase the wider applications of its autonomous technology. Building on its existing airport deployments, the trial will enable Aurrigo to apply its technology to a new and complex operating environment while exploring its potential application across the ports sector and other end markets.
Richard Fairchild, Chief Operations Officer at Aurrigo International, commented: “Our autonomous vehicles are already transforming how airports operate in six countries and now is the right time to bring that technology to seaports. A live seaport is a similar environment to an airport, with operations traffic of all sizes, pedestrians, and additionally public traffic and demand that shifts with ferry and cruise turnarounds.
This is an exciting challenge which could lead to Auto-Shuttle® carrying passengers at ports around the world and open the door to our larger Auto-Cargo® vehicle at freight-focused ports.”
